My wife Kristin, my mom, and I stood in front of it tonight in Yarmouth. Most nights it's lit white. Tonight it was orange, for Agent Orange, the chemical that's killed roughly 300,000 Vietnam veterans since the war ended. Five times more than the 58,000 whose names are actually on that wall.
My father, HM3 Russell Jacobson, survived Hill 861 in March of 1967. He came home. He built a life, raised a family, had three kids. And Agent Orange killed him anyway, 48 years later, in 2015.
None of those 300,000 deaths get a name on this wall. There's no memorial for the ones who made it home and died slow instead. Standing there tonight with my family, orange light on all those names, I kept thinking about how many more names should be there and never will be.
